Ever since releasing her debut solo album 'Safety in Numbers' in 1989, Margaret Urlich has come to realise just how much her music is a part of people's lives. Despite the fact that she was a completely unknown quantity, New Zealand born Urlich saw her first album steadily build into a major hit on the Australian charts. By '91, 'Safety in Numbers' had gained the singer an astonishing three platinum albums in Australia and a No.1 platinum album in her homeland.

KEVIN BORICH EXPRESS - No Turning Back (1979)
Kevin Borich started his career in the 1960's with the LA-DE-DA'S in New Zealand, he later formed the Kevin Borich Express in Sydney in the 1970's, and has performed at many big Festival events in Australia. Joe Walsh has recorded with Kevin Borich and The Party Boys (of which Borich was a founding member). Kevin Borich has also jammed with Carlos Santana, Bo Diddley, John Mayall, Taj Mahal and Ron Wood. He has toured overseas with Jimmy Barnes, and he was inducted into the Australian Blues Foundation Hall Of Fame in 2003

John Paul Young was the most popular and successful Australian male solo singer of the late Seventies. His rapid rise to fame began when he was chosen by producer Simon Napier-Bell to record a song called Pasadena, written by former Easybeats' Harry Vanda and George Young. It became a hit in 1972. The big breakthrough came in March 1975 when Alberts released John's recording of Vanda & Young's "Yesterday's Hero", a song about the fleeting nature of pop stardom which clearly drew on Harry and George's own experiences as former teen idols. The record shot into the national charts in April and gave John his first #1 hit, staying at #1 on the Melbourne chart for six weeks before being knocked off the top spot by Hush's Boney Maroney.John's laconic, no-bull attitude led to some good-natured on-screen sparring with gushy talent coordinator Ian "Molly" Meldrum, and many fans will still remember the famous "argument" during which John supposedly punched Molly. Of course, such rivalry made for great publicity, but John is adamant that he "pulled" the punch and that all concerned knew it was a joke. Nevertheless the incident has since become accepted as fact.

The Hitmen began life as Johnny and the Hitmen, a part-time, party band led by Radio Birdman Master of Ceremonies and backing singer Johnny Kannis in 1977. The ranks were populated by a shifting cast of Birdman members and friends.This Live album "Tora Tora Tora DTK" was a good representation of the band. Heroes began in October 1977 when ex-Rabbit members Jim Porteus, Mark Tinson & Phil Screen recruited vocalist Peter De Jong. Basing themselves in Newcastle emphasising pub rock which gained them a good following. In 1980 the band signed to Alberts/EMI and recorded this, their self titled album which re

Heroes other claim to fame is that they were the last band to play at Newcastle's Star Hotel, the controversial closure of which sparked off street violence and rioting that night. Their choice of song, The Star and the Slaughter, led later to singer Peter de Jong being charged with the incitement to riot. One verse runs: "I want action, And I want fighting in the streets. Gonna take this town by storm, Gonna burn the buildings down ... "

DECKCHAIR OVERBOARD were John Clifforth (v, g,k) and Cathy McQuade (v, b, k). Their self-titled album released on Regular Records (L 38438) was produced by well know producer Mark Opitz and is a nice collection of typical mid-80's pop-rock. While the record is a good listen, I am more partial to the track on the Nine O'Clock Muse compilation. A perfect example of a band that initially had an interesting edge to their style only to see it polished off by over-production and a push for a more "mainstream" sound. Look out for the bad cover of "It's All In The Game". :-)

Recorded in Sydney in mid 1980 this is the first solo album by Chris Turner, a guitarist formerly in ROSE TATTOO and BUFFALO, also features fellow Rose Tattoo members, the late Pete Wells, Dallas Royal and Geordie Leach. Real rocking guitar playing from Chris Turner as well as great slide guitar from Peter Wells, not a well known album, but a classic none the less, if you like guitar, you'll like this.

That type of scene unfortunately does not exist anymore, mainly thanks to Sydney's supposedly premier rock station 2MMM (yes another dig at them) not playing real Aussie rock, just playing rock classics, killing off the venues....

Black Alice was a Perth heavy metal band from the early 1980s that sounded like Judas Priest.
The album was financed by West Coast Records, Perth, of which was managed by Gary Keady who at the time had an output deal with Powderworks Records in Sydney and Powderworks were an independent distributed by RCA. RCA sponsored their recording session in Singapore and released the album internationally before it was made available in Australia.
Powderworks never released the album, only the single 'In the Hall of the Ancient Kings'. The album was only ever released in Europe with a deal done by Gary Keady with John Glover of 'Street Tunes', who owned the library of Paul Kossoff.
Black Alice were badly done by. The album Endangered Species was excellent and totally original, a little ahead of it's time for Australia. Even Kerrang voted it in 1984 as one of most original albums to come out of Australia. Like a lot of Australian albums at the time 'Endangered Species' got caught up in the independent 'hassle'. Because the album was made without major record company support and because the band was from Perth, there was little chance of getting a deal direct with a major and thus no hope of gaining promotion to promote the album and the band. It was not a particular success and Black Alice effectively ceased to be shortly afterward.
In 1988 Page and Hartley revived the band with help from Cichon and Johnston from Rose Tattoo to provide the soundtrack for the film Sons of Steel in which Hartley starred.
Page formed Trilogy in 1984 with two former members of Saracen and later did extensive session work including two Angus McDeth albums and in the mid-90s formed a cover band called Black and Blue that evolved into Black Steel.

First forming in 1979, playing a lot of covers in the pubs around Adelaide before folding in '84, and then getting back together in '86. The pub rock scene was quite healthy back then, and they were very popular. Almost Human actually hold the record for attracting the biggest crowd to the Bridgeway Hotel squeezing in 1800 people in for one gig! Unfortunately, the scene started to die out towards the end of the 80's, and they only put out this release - the EP 'Hold On'.
